Kong's Vertical Adventure

Game project by team Supreme Five for the ICS 169 Capstone class at UC Irvine. 

Kong’s Vertical Adventure is simple enough to understand how to play - but it takes the most determined type of person to master. In the distant dystopian future, the player, going by the name "Kong", awakens trapped deep within an abyss of a laboratory, with no recollection of who he is or what his purpose entails. With the constant threat of death following him, Kong must jump and climb their way back up to freedom, and reclaim his memory, all the while avoiding treacherous obstacles and doing battle with vile machinery. 

Our game makes the player feel accomplished and stronger, as if they have overcome their own weakness and surpassed their limits as a platforming gamer. This vertical platformer, despite its cute and innocent aesthetic, will put you to the test as you race against time itself, maneuvering up obstacles and traps to do battle with boss enemies who want the adorable titular character Kong dead. Jump up and across various platforms, including some that try to push you off, some you can jump through, and even some that break once you land. Use the enemies' weapons against them, and watch out for their attacks and the spikes below! With every boss you defeat, more hints of your past are unlocked...

Use Kong's access to a "Flash" power, in which you are able to teleport upwards at a distance a bit further than your jump range. This can be used to clear hard-to-reach platforms, or to make quick escapes to safety if you plummet to your doom. Keep in mind that this power must be recharged every time you use it! 

Our game may look ripped straight from a child’s coloring book, but if you give this game to your kids, you better have faith that they’re ready for the challenge. If you’ve ever played Jump King, then you best prepare yourself for an upgrade, because Kong’s Vertical Adventure makes that look like child’s play. Escape Kong’s vertical enslavement and become a platformer master.

CONTROLS

• Left arrow key OR A key to move left
• Right arrow key OR D key to move right
• Space key to jump
• Hold down the space key to jump higher
• F key for “Flash” (Teleport)
• Hold down F to see where you will land, release F to teleport
• P key to open Pause menu
